Filter Coffee Machine and Batch Brew: Consistent and Simple

A good filter coffee machine controls temperature and water distribution. That does not make the method less serious; it makes it especially repeatable.

Starting Recipe

  • 55 to 60 g coffee per litre of water
  • medium grind
  • fresh, odour-free water
  • the paper filter specified by the manufacturer

For Consistent Results

  1. Weigh coffee and water instead of estimating spoons and cup volume.
  2. Insert the filter and, where the brewer and paper allow, rinse it briefly.
  3. Level the coffee bed and allow the full brew cycle to finish.
  4. Gently swirl the carafe after brewing to mix the extraction.
  5. Clean and descale the basket, carafe and water path as instructed by the manufacturer.

Very long holding times change aroma and freshness. For larger batches, a thermal carafe is usually gentler than a continuously heated plate. Adjust grind and dose to the brewer, batch size and coffee.
